Project Presence

Today was a typical Friday, because I work on Sundays I get Fridays off.  And I usually spend that time doing all my “Domestic Art” stuff like cleaning the house, doing the laundry, running errands, making a menu plan and/or going grocery shopping, and finishing any other random projects around the house.

Today was only different because as I was doing all of the above I was listening to some podcasts.  Most of the podcasts were from Jess Lively, my new favorite “creative inspiration” lady to listen to.  And for me today, as I listened, I came across an over-arching theme.  Be Present.  Be Intentional.  Be Here Now.

Not only to be present, but to find joy in the moments.

Project Presence Begins
Taking time to be present as I write this post.

I realized I had not been doing that, but I longed for it.  So much of my time lately has been waiting.

And I realized today, I don’t want to be waiting anymore.  I am not going to wait to live my life after we receive our little blessing.  I’m going to live now.  (And really that’s a big reason why I joined roller derby a year ago.)

That’s not saying I’m OK with where things are now, that is not saying I’m surrendering to being childless.  It’s just saying that I am here, I can’t change it, I don’t like it, but I am trying to accept it.  And instead of fighting against it, I am going to find joy while I am here.

It reminds me of something a friend told me while I was single in college.  She said, “don’t save the china.”  Meaning, don’t wait to enjoy something just because you don’t have something else.  (Or in that case, don’t wait to enjoy your good stuff – your china – until after you are married, enjoy it now.)

So, I’m going to start a new project…Project Presence.  For the next 7 days, I want to do something to help me find joy where I am right now in life.  Where I intentionally become more intentional.  Whether it’s coffee with a friend, planning a quick road trip with my husband, completing a project that’s been on hold, whatever.

I think I might want to do this more than 7 days, but I figure I should start small.  And to help me document those moments, I’ll be using Instagram (you can follow me here if you’d like).
