Waiting For A Promise

Have you ever received a promise from God, and then wait….and wait….and wait to see it come to reality?  Maybe you’re still waiting.  Maybe you’ve received your promise but haven’t realized it yet.  Maybe you’re already rejoicing in the gift of His promise.  Whatever your situation, sometimes it’s hard to remember that God always delivers on His promises.
This is tricky though, it’s HIS PROMISES…not what we’re hoping His promises might be.  Which means, in order to hold fast to that promise in those dark times, you have to be confident in the promise you are holding on to.  Was it really God’s, or was it your hope and your flesh trying to arm twist God into what you want?
When we were in our dark times of battling with infertility, I wanted so badly to cling to the promise that God would provide us a child…a biological child.  But, as I sought after God’s heart, prayed, cried, read His word, and prayed some more, I found His promise for our family.  It was a promise with hope, just not the exact promise I was hoping for.  His promise to my aching heart was that we would become a family of more than two, and that we would become parents.  But He did not promise the how.
It was tough waiting for His promise in those few years of battling with infertility, waiting to become parents, not knowing the how.  But, He came through, like He always does.  And now we are a little family of three, blessed with His promise, through adoption.
This morning, as I was reading through Joshua, I came across the story of Caleb.  It made me so thankful that I did not have to wait 45 years for my promise to become reality.  And it also made me thankful again that I serve an honorable, trustworthy God.  A wonderful God who fulfills His promises.
What promise are you waiting on?

“The people of Judah came to Joshua at Gilgal. Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite spoke: “You’ll remember what God said to Moses the man of God concerning you and me back at Kadesh Barnea. I was forty years old when Moses the servant of God sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land. And I brought back an honest and accurate report. My companions who went with me discouraged the people, but I stuck to my guns, totally with God, my God. That was the day that Moses solemnly promised, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance, you and your children’s, forever. Yes, you have lived totally for God.’”
“Now look at me: God has kept me alive, as he promised. It is now forty-five years since God spoke this word to Moses, years in which Israel wandered in the wilderness. And here I am today, eighty-five years old! I’m as strong as I was the day Moses sent me out. I’m as strong as ever in battle, whether coming or going. So give me this hill country that God promised me. You yourself heard the report, that the Anakim were there with their great fortress cities. If God goes with me, I will drive them out, just as God said.”
“Joshua blessed him. He gave Hebron to Caleb son of Jephunneh as an inheritance. Hebron belongs to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite still today, because he gave himself totally to God, the God of Israel.”
